Drakensberg Accommodation

Northern Drakensberg Accommodation

The northern Drakensberg is roughly the Drakensberg from Oliviers Hoek Pass, the Amphitheatre with Mont-aux-Sources, the Mnweni and up to Cathedral Peak.

The Amphitheatre is the most photographed section of the Drakensberg and is in the Royal Natal National Park area. A variety of very comfortable accommodation can be found here. The area is less populated than the central Drakensberg and is generally quieter but many people prefer for this reason. The views and hikes are incredible.

The village of Bergville is on the R74.

It is also very convenient as trips to the central Drakensberg, Cathedral Peak as well as Golden Gates National Park and Clarens are all within one and a half hours drive and make for a very pleasant day trip.

The Central Drakensberg accommodation

The central Drakensberg stretches from Cathedral peak southwards including Champagne Castle, Cathkin Peak, Monks Cowl, Injasuthi and down to Giants Castle.

Winterton is a picturesque village, also on the R74, and is the gateway to Champagne Valley in the central Drakensberg. Champagne Valley can be accessed via Winterton where you turn off onto the R600. You can also take the turnoff to the Estcourt North turnoff and follow the Draycott / Loskop sign. This is not a good road to take if you are traveling at night. Also be careful as you get to quite a densely populated area with some shops on either side of the road and many pedestrians. Many taxis also stop there. It is fine during the day but you just have to slow down and look out for school children, adults, dogs, goats, chickens and often not so “sober” people. Once you get to a crossing with Thokozisa Centre on the left corner, you turn left and continue on the R600.

The Southern Drakensberg

The Southern Drakensberg does not have the spectacular peaks of the northern and central Drakensberg but Sani Pass is worth driving up if you have a 4x4. You will have to take your passport if you want to cross over into Lesotho. Underberg, Himeville are some of the villages in the southern Drakensberg. The southern Drakensberg is well known for its trout fishing dams.
