Drakensberg Accommodation and Information

This website when complete should give you all the information on Drakensberg accommodation as well as activities that you will need to plan where you want to stay and what you want to do and see in the Drakensberg.
The Drakensberg, a WORLD HERITAGE SITE, is a must, to experience some of South Africa’s beauty.
It is devided into 3 main regions, the Northern Drakensberg, the Central Drakensberg and the Southern Drakensberg. As the Northern Drakensberg and the Central Drakensberg are the most popular areas with accommodation in abundance and in variety, as well as a tremendous variety of attractions and activities, most of the information on this website relates to the Northern Drakensberg and the Central Drakensberg.
The Northern Drakensberg is generally regarded as the area from Olivier’s Hoek Pass, the Amphitheatre with Mont-Aux-Sources , the Mnweni and up to Cathedral Peak. The village of Bergville lies in the Northern Drakensberg area and is on the R74. The Central Drakensberg stretches from Cathedral Peak, Monk’s Cowl, Injasuthi and down to Giant’s Castle. The picturesque village of Winterton is the Gateway to the Central Drakensberg and is also on the R74. The Southern Drakensberg lies south of Giant’s Castle.
When travelling from Gauteng to the Northern Drakensberg or the Central Drakensberg, it is easiest to take the N3 as far as Harrismith. Ftom there take the N5 Boemfontein / Bethlehem for approximately 4 km. Turn left onto the R712 Phuthaditjhaba / R74 Bergville road. Travel approximately 9 km and turn left onto the R74. This will take you past Sterkfontein Dam, which is worth seeing, down Olivier’s Hoek Pass to Bergville, or continue through to Winterton.
When travelling from Durban, take the N3 until you pass the Shell Ultra City after Estcourt, and take the first off ramp to the left marked Colenso / R74 Bergville. You do however reach Winterton before Bergville. From the N3 to Winterton is 24km and from Winterton to Bergville is 23km.
In each area you will find accommodation varying from hotels, (a retreat in the Northern Drakensberg), lodges, guest houses, B&B”s, self-catering to camping and caravan sites. Many of the resorts also offer optional accommodation offering dinner, bed and breakfast, bed and breakfast or also self-catering. For those choosing the bed and breakfast (B&B) option, there are a number of restaurants available or if you prefer choose a B&B that has braai (barbeque) facilities.
When planning your visit to the Drakensberg, decide what you are planning to do before you decide on your accommodation. Some want to get away from the hectic city life and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the Drakensberg, while others want to take part in many of the activities the Drakensberg area has to offer as well as it’s beauty. If you are the exploring, activity type you could consider Winterton accommodation as you then have access to the Northern Drakensberg, Cathedral Peak and the Central Drakensberg. For peace, beauty, incredible views and a variety of hiking and walking trails I suggest Vergezient Mountain Retreat in the Northern Drakensberg.
