Winterton Information and Accommodation
Winterton, the gateway to the Central Drakensberg, offers a variety of accommodation as well as easy access to all necessary information on the Drakensberg.
Winterton was laid out on 3 farms in 1905 and was sold by the Natal Government to soldiers, in recognition of their service during the Anglo Boer War and was named after the Minister of Agriculture in Natal, Mr. HD Winter.
The Winterton Museum is well worth visiting. It has a fascinating display on the history of farming in the area, the early inhabitants and the Anglo Boer War. Artifacts and copies of the art of the San people or Bushmen as they are also known as, features strongly, with excellent explanations of their lifestyle and how this was portrayed in their art. The battles of Spioenkop and Vaalkrans are given priority due to the close proximity of the battlefields to Winterton.
The main street is called Springfield Road and is also the shopping centre of the Village. Dr. During is the local doctor and also has his practice in the Springfield Road, close to Winterton Pharmacy. For grocery shopping, Winterton KwikSpar is open Monday to Saturday and Simmies is open 7 days a week from 7 in the morning to 7 in the evening.
Winterton also boasts a hairdressing salon, Silver Scissors. Many brides and members of the bridal party have their hair dressed here as the Drakensberg with it’s spectacular views, the tranquility and it’s great variety of excellent venues makes it the ideal place for couples to make their vows.

Off the main street, in Bergview Drive, is PalmSwift Guest House. This is the ideal place for those who want to get away from the noise of the traffic. The main street is also the R74, which is the road that leads through to Berville and on to Harrismith and therefore has a fair amount of heavy traffic. PalmSwift Guest House can accommodate 10 people and is situated in a large, tranquil garden with enormous trees.
