Winterton Accommodation and Information
Winterton accommodation offers mainly B&B and self catering accommodation.
Winterton is the gateway to the Central Drakensberg and accommodation is ideal for those wishing to explore the central Drakensberg.
Winterton was laid out on 3 farms in 1905 and was sold by the Natal Government to soldiers, in recognition of their service during the Anglo Boer War and was named after the Minister of Agriculture in Natal, Mr. HD Winter.
The Winterton Museum is well worth visiting. It has a fascinating display on the history of farming in the area, the early inhabitants and the Anglo Boer War. Artifacts and copies of the art of the San people or Bushmen as they are also known as, features strongly, with excellent explanations of their lifestyle and how this was portrayed in their art. The battles of Spioenkop and Vaalkrans are given priority due to the close proximity of the battlefields to Winterton.
The main street is called Springfield Road and is also the shopping centre of the Village. Dr. During is the local doctor (036 488 1145) and also has his practice in the Springfield Road, close to Winterton Pharmacy (036 488 1177)
For grocery shopping, Winterton KwikSpar is open Monday to Saturday and Simmies is open 7 days a week from 7 in the morning to 7 in the evening. There is also a very good butchery. If you are a biltong fan, the biltong is really good. There is a bottle store at the Bridge Hotel and another one accross the river - Grewans Bottle Store.
